The 55-year-old French legend was dining with former Liverpool manager and ex-Scotland boss Andy Roxburgh at the Pigalle restaurant in Johannesburg's Sandton district when he suddenly collapsed at the table and fell from his chair to the ground.
Emergency services were called to the incident, which happened at around 8.15pm UK time. Platini was then wheeled away on a stretcher and accompanied by Houllier in an ambulance.
Initial reports claimed that the former Juventus midfielder may have suffered a suspected heart attack, but those fears were quickly ruled out by UEFA sources, who insisted that Platini was in no danger.
The source said: 'Michel has had flu for a couple of days and he fainted in a restaurant and was taken to hospital. He is having some tests but is conscious and well.'
